Do I need to see a GP?

Demand for routine GP appointments at Brynmawr Surgery, like many other surgeries at the moment, is very high. Whilst we will do our best to get make as many routine appointments available for our patients, please think if you actually need to see a GP for your problem, or whether it can be dealt with by another healthcare professional

You may not need to see a GP.  FREE treatment and advice is available from your Pharmacist for a number of common medical conditions such as:

  • ACNE
  • ATHLETE’S FOOT
  • BACKACHE (ACUTE) (ages 20-55)
  • CHICKEN POX (age 4mths – 14yrs)
  • CONJUNCTIVITIS (age over 2yrs)
  • CONSTIPATION
  • DRY EYES (see optician 1st)
  • DRY SKIN
  • HAEMORRHOIDS
  • HAY FEVER
  • HEAD LICE
  • INDIGESTION AND REFLUX (over 12yrs)
  • INTERTRIGO/RINGWORM
  • NAPPY RASH
  • ORAL THRUSH
  • SCABIES (age over 2 yrs)
  • SORE THROAT / TONSILLITIS
  • TEETHING (age over 3months)
  • THREADWORMS (age over 2yrs)
  • VERRUCA (age over 2yrs)
  • VAGINAL THRUSH (ages 16-60)

Your pharmacist can also provide advice on the following conditions

  • INGROWING TOENAIL
  • COLD SORES
  • DIARRHOEA
  • COLIC
  • MOUTH ULCERS

Eye problems can be dealt with by your optician. If you have an eye problem contact your optician first for advice and this may avoid you having to wait to see a GP

Mouth problems can be seen by your dentist. Contact your dentist for any mouth problems and they will be able to offer advice and treatment in many cases.

At Brynmawr we also have other healthcare professionals who may be able to help you with your medical issue, without the need to wait for a GP appointment.

Our nursing team can deal with a number of minor illnesses and we also have a Paediatric Nurse on our team who can help with issues that your child may be experiencing. 

We have Mental Health Professionals to help you with things like low mood, anxiety and depression and a Practice Pharmacist who can help you with medication queries. 

We also have a Physiotherapist working as part of out team who you can see in relation to muscular complaints. 

Our reception team may ask you for some information about your medical condition so that they can direct you to the most appropriate healthcare professional, so you can be seen more quickly.
